A Zoological Datum: How Honey Bees Use Datums for Mapping and Navigation

Aside from humans, bees are the only animals on earth known to map and communicate spatial information, including using their own datums.  This article follows the work of Austrian scientist Karl von Frisch, who discovered in the 1940s how bees track spatial features, such as plants, and communicate those locations to other bees using a spatial reference to a known datum.
