Can artificial intelligence improve maps for land conservation?

Microsoft has been working to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to speed-up the process of classifying satellite imagery and separate out different land-cover types, such as water, vegetation, and urbanized areas.  The process would allow land-cover maps to be produced more frequently, allowing environmental groups to better track environmental issues and guide restoration efforts.
